Frequently Asked Questions About Zoning
What is Zoning?
Zoning ordinances define land uses in a community, whether they be commercial, residential, industrial, or parks, and they benefit the community by establishing design standards for the land use.
How does zoning get changed?
Zoning designations are changed via a Zoning Map Amendment. This is a review undertaken whenever a request is made to change the zoning classification of a piece of property. Although amending the zoning ordinance is left to the discretion of the City Council, whom has final authority, certain criteria outlined in Chapter 21A.50 of the Salt Lake City Code should be reviewed to determine the appropriateness of the amendment. The Planning Commission makes a recommendation to the City Council prior to its final decision.
Is this zoning map current?
Yes. This is the same zoning data used by Salt Lake City staff. However, the Planning Division should be contacted before starting a project as changes due to recently adopted amendments may not be immediately available on the map. Recently adopted ordinances may be viewed using the Salt Lake City Infobase.
